Photo Uploads and Guidelines

Understanding picture uploads.. or check some of the videos out, here's one of them. http://www.pixelinduced.com/video/photoshop-tips-image-resizing
NO NUDE PHOTO's or VIDEO's allowed! See discussion "Posting Guidelines" and for more information regarding uploads below - or see discussion "Photo Uploads - Tips"

Q1. Why does it take so long to load some photos?

A1. Most likely the photo was left on it's original state since captured and the size of the file is huge.

Q2. Should I resize my photos before uploading?

A2. Certainly, for one it uses less storage space. The photo loads much faster. And for securing your pic from unknown people on the net stealing your picture.

Q3. Should I watermark my pictures?

A3. Well yes and no, if you have resize it and adjust the resolution the photo is some what harder to be reuse. Watermarking definitely a good idea but if it's a huge picture to begin with, some one can just crop out the watermark (of course that depends where the watermark was placed) or edit it out altogether.

Q4. What other benefits for resizing my pics?

A4. By doing so, you are more likely have others viewing your collection. And what's worst than slow loading pic? Most people just can not stand slow loading photos, it's just too time consuming and most will just go to the next photos or worst close off their browsers and leave.

Q5. What are the accepted DPI's on pics?

A5. Most pics works best as low as 72dpi, sample your photos with different dpi for the best results - dpi is more related to printing but a good practise to do this anyway.  WIKI will explain more if you interested in learning more as referenced in the next Question.

Q6. What is a dpi?

A6. Check this wiki out for better explanation -> WIKI

Q7. Dimension of the pics?

A7. If you already resample your dpi to say 72dpi the size of the files are pretty acceptable on most sites, I would suggest the longest length of the pic to be approx. 800 pixels.. Keeping the file size to approx. less than 250kb making viewing faster yet retain the dimension of the photos plus quicker uploads. And most importantly keeping the audience back for more!! :)

Q8. How does one protect my photos?

A8. As previous answers above, to protect yourselves from others stealing your photos you should resize your photos to approx. 800 to 900 pixels on the longest length. No matter if it's in a forum, album or your personal collection on the web.

Q9. Does PI check the size of the photos uploaded and why?

A9. Yes, firstly when multiple pages of pics are upload to a forum and group it takes a long time to load. One of the biggest complaint of all photography sites are that members do not know how to resize their pics and secondly just basically forgotten or just never knew what the impact to others.

As you can imagine 10 pics in a group msg all attempting to display all at once will take up some time and by having pics at it's original state or not resize at all causes problems to some viewers/members attempting to view the page.

800 to 900 pixels on the longest length and 72 dpi of the photo is quite large on many monitors and this is the recommendation for all members to comply with so that everyone can enjoy viewing your photos

Q10. Is there a limit to how many pictures I can upload?

A10. There is limit of 20 pics a day you can upload but think of this before you upload. Say for instance, you uploaded 10 photos of your favourite and another member uploaded 20 to 100 photos at any one time in one session.

The member who uploaded 20-100 pics in statistic and known fact, have less chances of their photos being viewed. Why, considering they uploaded loads of photos? Well it's really normal behaviour of an individual and people tend to get tired of viewing the same multiple pictures of similar style or from the same individual at one time.

What we recommend is to upload 5 to 10 maximum per session or day for your benefit and at the same time you should think about creating an album for different styles or project

Q11. How to have my photo show up in a post within a discussion rather than an attachment?
  • A11. If you select the image icon   it will prompt you to "ADD AN IMAGE" to the post.
  • But if you select Upload Files then you will be prompt to "ATTACH FILE(s)"

Take a look at the "Photo Competition Rules & Guidelines" , there's a visual version illustrating the two options.
