It is the conversion of 16 bit files to Jpegs Aperture that is the problem. Of course I don't know why someone would do that. There are several discussions about it that make me think there is a problem. Some are on the apple forum.

'clarification'
looking at your link below i thought i'd explain that there is actually no problem with 16 bit tiffs and .jpeg files in Aperture.
The poster in the link had a problem because he didn't understand that by changing the file handle from .tiff and using 'save as' to jpeg would render it irretrievable back in Aperture.
This is perfectly normal and how file structure works.
I can't understand why he would want to do this as the norm is to keep and save in .tiff throughout the work flow - converting one or several copies to jpeg can be done at anytime?

Personally when i look at the image i am drawn straight to the eyes.
