"No Borders Nor Boundaries" - Where Photographers get together
Permalink Reply by Tim on July 21, 2010 at 4:19am Tim pretty nice costal photo. I wanted to say that don't get too caught up in the standard photo measurements. I worked with a professional in California and he would crop, crop, crop. You get rid of the non-essentials, the redundancies that take away from the image, and the parts that don't add to the image. Cropping of the bottom sounded like a great idea.
Christine had an idea on how to maintain the ratio. Take a look at how some of the professionals on this site do it. Another thought is you can always add an insert like a matt which they do framing to make your shot look like a standardized photo. This idea of keeping a certain ratio is problematic to me. It forces you to keep in things in the photo that take away from the photo's beauty and if you do crop out the beautiful areas to make a certain size you can end up eliminating the areas that add beauty to the picture. It will keep the image the size you want but the image to me won't look as beautiful or appealing. In the end it comes down to a cropped ratio vs the beauty of the picture and what is more important to you.
Tim here is a link to Photo.net discussion about this aspect ratio and cropping.
