"No Borders Nor Boundaries" - Where Photographers get together
Fine-art photography
Hey everyone!
Hope I have the right forum for this question -
I'm doing a University project in dance photography and I am looking into how to take more creative photos, not just images of bodily positions. As a part of my research I'm looking into "fine-art photography" and reading what defines this term.. and I had an idea to gather opinions from other photographers what they think the term may encompass.
So,"what is fine-art photography"? I'm leaving the question vague as I am looking for any kind of response from any kind of photographer :)
I'm happy to hear and read everything, even if I don't/can't use it for my project, as my interest in this subject goes beyond University projects :D If I decide I might like to add an opinion directly into my writing I'll ask for your permission first - as we have to reference academically.

The photos that are left after you have removed the commercial photography, photojournalism photography and snap-shots. Or, I suppose, photos that are taken with forethought for the sake of the picture.

Theresa! Just saw your forum, so I thought I'd add my two cents!
To me fine art photography is a photograph that expresses a feeling or thought by using a design element, lighting, over-all color or B&W or another graphic element that attracts the viewer, or a certain pose or mood. Some of the best photographs that I've seen make me see something different each time that I look at the picture, make me laugh, bring a tear to my eye, or bring up some other emotion. In dance photography, the best pictures have great and different lighting, or action. Certain stage lighting, and in different coloring, can make or break a good photograph! Hopee this helps!

fine art phptpgraphically in my mind is a picture in which the artist/photographer has a certain insight as to how the end product he wishes to convey will end up. this takes the photograph from inside the mind and portrayed as he has seen it done physically with real people or animals or items his vision has seen. this is usually why a photograph has soo strong emotion to the viewer the person has seen his vision and spent time energy and usually money to recreate this and why they are so good. time love and sentiment an a lot of emotion and where with all has gone into it unlike a point and shoot picture

Thankyou for your insights, I have summed up the ideas for my portfolio in a general paragraph on what may make an art photograph (they are also on the same lines as my own thoughts and those of others I found out in research), but haven't quoted anyone directly!

Fine art photography:refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides a visual account for news events, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to advertise products or services.

I find the responses hilarious so far, why? Because as we all know art is completely subjective so anything can be 'fine art' in my opinion. What gives one the right to tell another what is and is not art? A snapshot can be considered art as can a commercial or photo journalistic shot and funniest of all is that it doesn't even matter if the creator intended it to be considered art or not hahaha. I believe the term 'fine art' to be nothing other than a pretentious label.
Don't just bend the rules, smash them ;)

Hi Shando - that is what I was looking for, people's views and opinions :) Of course you are right, art is subjective. On another forum I frequent there is a topic currently called "What is art?", and naturally there are a few debates going on there aswell! :D I also asked a dance photographer for her views and she also pointed out the case of photojournalism - someone can go out and snap something intended for the news, and people will view it as art. Whereas someone else with a concept and art in mind can create something that people will view as mere 'snapshots'! I believe the question really to have no solid answer. In my Uni project I wrote an 'answer' that was naturally based on my thoughts and what others had shared with me.
Thanks for your answer - I like your philosophy - smashing rules hehe, that's all the fun of art (whatever art may be! :D)
I also say - less thinking, more doing! Unfortunately Uni is quite the academic educational path!

I think anything that had been created in this universe is an ART. The human creation itself is an ART.. we all lived in a very creative and unique and artistic ways, the creation of images thru lights is an ART the we called PHOTOGRAPHY...
